One Week IN

Alright -
I've done Booty Barre twice and Agility twice this week.
so BB Mon Wed Sat and AGI Tues Thurs.

This is a highly challenging and really fun rotation of workouts!
In Booty Barre, I'm getting this great all over conditioning with some stretching and Agility is just all out insane! I'm throwing medicine balls, pushing sleds- crazy interval timed rotations -
It just feels so GOOD!
All of it!
After just one week I feel a shift in my body that is amazing. It is just a mindset? A reaction to all over body soreness? Excitement for a challenging new workout? - MAYBE actual physical changes that I'm aiming for? It just seems like everything has been taken to a new level.

Because I'm shifting into more all terrain type workouts - I need more sports bras!!
- I have only ONE I really love. Its called the 50 Rep by Lululemon.
Unfortunately - I got it from the Orlando outlet store last December and it isn't on their website anymore. This is something I find annoying with Lululemon. I can't depend on them having what works for me consistently - and all the new sports bras from them look like its for an A/B cup gal.

I like the Nike Airborne Running tanks a lot. - I feel secure and its flattering - but for some reason I can't find one in just plain black! They are all neon.

- I'm on a BLACK or GREY kick right now. Usually I'm all about the bright happy leggings and colors - but I've noticed the last few weeks -I have been only reaching for the blacks and greys.

What does this mean???!!! Blacks and Greys?!!
LOL!

Agility Fitness Experience

This month of September I plan to do Booty Barre 2-3 times a week and also an Agility class 2 times a week. This is at Agility Fitness Experience in Venice, Florida. It is a physical therapy center on one side and a BIG open fitness area on the other with an astro turf type grassy area - weights - benches - sandbags- TRX bands, medicine balls, ab rollers, stability balls, sleds, HUGE tug of war type ropes and a lot more!!

The Agility class is FULL BODY timed intervals with a timed resting transition. Then moving through stations of different workouts. Get READY for KIMBERLY!! She is very cool - down to earth and grounding. She really drives you through each work out and is such a nice person! I like the energy in this establishment because I don't feel judged or looked down upon from more fit people! You can tell they are just really good people and want you to do your best!

example: 30 seconds ON - 10 seconds transition. 4 complete sets. jump rope, weighted side step lunges, push ups, kettlebell swings. I do as many as I can while the 30 seconds is ON! then switch to the next movement after my 10 second rest.  . . and man that 10 seconds comes quick when you start to fatigue!
We also did a circuit like this for abs to start everything off. regular crunches then bicycle moves then lower leg raises.
- Then we moved to the weights section and did bulgarians? - One leg weighted lunges. I held 8 lb weights and put one leg extended behind me up on a weight bench and lunged - 30 seconds switch to other leg.. then weights down and 30 seconds jump squats. this was rinse repeat 4 cycles.

- Then we moved over to the TRX bands. I LOVE THESE THINGS!!!!!
Take everything you do then instantly make it more difficult by doing them on the bands LOL! IE push ups and pull ups. The instability of using the bands forces you to engage your core to stay strong and steady.

Then we moved onto another 4 set up stations thing 40 seconds on 10 seconds transition. First was throwing a 12 lv medicine ball up against the wall. At first this seemed kind of weak and silly but HAHAHAHA killer arms once you get into the cycle! 40 secons up then move to 40 seconds high knees  - then 40 seconds chair position swinging these huge ropes that look like tug of war ropes. This was so freaking hard. -
then 40 seconds pushing a 35 lb sled around the astro turf grass like gym floor. The point was to lengthen and extend the body flatter to more of a plank position and push this sled so you need to really dig in with the legs  - killer!
- then back around to the medicine ball! - all this 4 times through!
 -
we started with abs we finish with abs! Though this time it was on a big stability ball. left side crunch ups then right - then center - then something COOL I've never done before.
flat on the back stability ball between the ankles, lift the legs and drop the stability ball and catch with your ankles again - that is a fantastic lower ab workout!!!
-
then we took some time to stretch out and roll out on the foam rollers since we felt kind of beat up from previous classes tried in the week! for me it was the booty barre and for Anna it was her first Agility class!
 - Oh yes if I mention WE- I'm talking about US! THE TEAM!!! in an older post I explain about THE TEAM! lol . The team consists of just me and my lifelong sisterly friend Anna! I met her when I was 5 years old! She lived across the street from me and we grew up together!
We have so much fun planning and tweaking our workouts and finding new workouts that challenge us.

Here is a pic of us last November! one of my favorites -at my bachelor/bachelorette party!! Matt and I had a joint one cause we wanted to be with all our friends and neither of us are into strip clubs LOL.
Anyway!!- Anna and I are splitting the week between tues thurs Agility class and then Booty barre.2-3 times a week with maybe checking out pilates or yoga to see!
- I love the combination of big challenging driving and strong movements blended with another day of barre class that has rhythm and beauty as well as good over all stretching.
- This will be Septembers workouts!!!!And hopefully to continue through the next few months upping the ante for challenge and fun!

The Booty Barre

This is Tracy Mallet, founder of the Booty Barre.
Alright! - My first class was last Saturday and can you say CALVES?!!!!
WHEEEEW! Now the only other Barre class I have to compare this to is Pure Barre and I have to say I feel Booty Barre is much more challenging all over. Though Pure Barre has a really great ab sequence and specifically targeted burning moves, I felt the booty barre worked ALL OVER - not just one section of one muscle. IE - when we did the thigh workouts in BB my whole thigh was engaged from start to finish - in PB I feel the tops of my thighs burning out only or just the backs depending on what move we are doing.

The Booty Barre or as I will refer to it as BB, is FULL ON. Rhythmic movement and more standard barre work with the use of releve' (on the toes) first and second positions - Plie'( knee bend)  Grand plie' ( deep knee bend -not squatting) and Grand Battement (swishing the leg forward and back in a kick)  - toes pointed, nice arm position, constant awareness of the placement and engagement of seat and thighs. Keep in mind - I am someone who took ballet class as a 7 year old, then again in college for a semester! So the terms came back to me fairly quickly - but the instructor was not only calling out the moves but also doing the entire workout with us - so she was easy to follow along. There were only 4 students in class including me! It is a small studio and she prefers 8-10ish max! - This is super nice because the Pure Barre classes get overly stuffed and we end up doing only the basic new person moves because of room and the overall skill of the class.

Though Pure Barre or PB, uses a constant hips tucked under position with a softly bent knee, BB prefers straight standing leg and more of a neutral hip stance. This is something very challenging for me to correct as I have been doing PB for nearly a year now! The PB stance is beaten into me!

From the get go I think BB arms blow PB arms out of the water. We used light 2-3 lb weights for reps, though shifting from first and  second positions flat on the floor to releve (up on the toes) positions. We moved into thighs and seat work at the barre which got me sweating not only from the exertion of rhythmic movements but also for the little aerobic inserts of things like strong leg kicks back into a deep lunge while holding one hand to the barre and the other swinging naturally forward and back - then adding in repeater knees, then dropping into mountain climbers and plank knees and bunny hops, then back up at the barre for side step lunges all engaging upper body and arms. - The instructor, Beth, BOOMING - MAKE IT PRETTY!!!!!!!!! She had a great energy to her and I could tell she really loved jamming out to the music- which is all your typical current dance stuff like Britney and Flo-Rida - Madonna etc.

We slowed down for a bit to do some moves in a chair position pulling off the barre. Imagine facing the barre legs hip distance apart and parallel.Move your body to a seated position like you are sitting in a chair - with arms forward and pulling off the barre. From this deep seated position we move our bodies up an inch and down an inch - constantly creating a C shape in the back and tucking hips under. OKAY -this move is miserably hard LOLOL. But my whole body was on fire!  After a while we do it all over again cept on the TOES!

She asked us to get a ball next - and place it between the knees - in this chair position pulsing and squeezing the knees together on the ball on the toes!!

After what seemed like an eternity of high energy barre work - we move to the mat for abs. placing the mat lengthwise out from the wall under the barre we laid our bodies and hung our arms so the upper body created a hanging C shape and then the legs laid flat straight along the rest of the mat. - This is different from Pure Barre because PB wants you to be sitting flat up against the wall for all movements and pushing outward with the upper body and arms against the barre - here in BB we are hanging !
- The leg lifts left then right then both together were measured and slow - VERY challenging . then side leg swings in a can can move ALSO very challenging for me.

In between all the different moves she has us do stretches. The idea is to work the muscle then stretch it all out to create long lean muscles - IE that DANCERS body.
So to finish we don't spend a lot of time stretching out. But there is a peaceful finishing when the music is gentle- the lights are off and she brings us through a few deep breaths for back extension, cobra stretches - then we move into a shell position or child pose. and finish!

I really loved the class and felt like it was a perfect blend of all the things I love! Cardio, interval, sculpting, toning, some ballet moves, rhythm, then stuff I really enjoyed from pure barre.

I was wiped out and really enjoyed the small class setting - also that the instructor said we can change so much up depending on what we feel we want to be working more on. She said we can add or remove more barre work - add or remove more abs. The possibilities for a consistently challenging workout that targets all aspects and leaves you with a general sense of well being is very attractive!.
- Though I love Pure Barre, I felt I wasn't getting a complete workout without the cardio component. PB has a nice overall well being feeling to it. But this has more over all attention to the body as a whole. In PB we get a deep burning feeling when moving into positions -BB doesn't have the deep burn - but an over all engagement for the entire hour long class.

I will say - I couldn't walk Sunday and Monday as my calves were on FIRE. This class is challenging on the feet as you are up on the toes a lot. By Tuesday I was fine to walk again. My obliques were also really sore!  I am someone who works out daily too!! I attended BB again yesterday Wednesday, and enjoyed the class even more - perhaps because I understood the rhythm of it more and was able to push myself more. I'm really excited about joining this little studio called Pilates Plus. It is a 99$ unlimited membership for all classes except reformers.  But I am looking forward to trying out Mat Pilates Yoga- and something called Yoga Fit.
- I also heard she will continue the 99$ specials if it is popular and I know it would be for me!!
The instructor/owner is BETH. She has super awesome energy - shes so sweet sending follow up emails and asking how you are with the work out. I can tell that she really loves what she does and she has a great attitude. I feel comfortable around her and in her classes.

If you have taken this class please let me know your thoughts!!
- I've been really thinking for a while about how much I love Pure Barre but wished it had a cardio component!! - I feel like I've found what I'm looking for!!

Here is my current favorite! Thank you to Florence!
OPI : Danke Shiny Red
In person it has this depth and richness - which stays bright and beautiful - not orange or pink!
 -
Usually I stick with Chanel nail polishes for the quality of color- but OPI has impressed me with this one!

Exploring the Barre

A somewhat lengthy visit from my sister! It was both enjoyable and grounding. There is something about being around family that presses the reset button. - I can interact with this person on any level and know that it will always be REAL. =) Shes the one on the RIGHT! - named Lara. I'm 2.5 years older and shes my only sibling!

As I adore Pure Barre, I can't help but feel the need to up the ante. My studio is not yet offering a consistent double tube (more advanced) class. I get it- fall is approaching and all the snowbirds are returning as well as many new people. They don't want to scare away new clients with an overly difficult class. BUT they are kind of letting down and potentially scaring away us oldies!! Pure Barre is designed to challenge you each time. Every class you are pushed further by yourself- to a shake point. But I can not help but notice there are just classes and instructors that are simply MORE CHALLENGING. I gravitate towards these - but it seems my fav instructors are so randomly scheduled now - and my inquiry to pure barre corporate of ever having a cardio component incorporated into their workout was met with a canned result.
 -
hence.
my interest in checking out booty barre! I know . . . .what a ridiculous name. I thought UGH You will never catch me at a place called the BOOTY BARRE!!!
- BUT - I went to the website thebootybarre.com and even though the blonde instructor sounds like a femme bot. . .. I enjoyed the CONCEPT of this.
INTERVAL CARDIO SCULPTING.
oh yes
sweet sweet words! how delicious! I must try!
-check out the video on the website if you like let me know thoughts too -especially if you have tried this!
So next month I will be trying this workout along with my first pilates and mat type things!

On to CLOTHES!
-
with this in my sink - I just put my lulu on hold for several months allowing them to get it back together and win me over.. . .
Those are my flash wunder under crops. I love them but WOW. bleed bleed bleed. - had them for months too and still that pink water!
- In the mean time.
I've been really enjoying wearing splits59. I'm totally addicted! I love this brand! Though they don't have all the trendy styles. I feel really cute and put together. I'm especially addicted to the ashby tanks. They have these awesome new capris -that also FEED my idea that everyone in the future should be wearing silver jumpsuits . . .and well. . . I guess we have arrived to the future!!
I'm totaly in love with the Splits59 GINGER 3/4 length tight - the black with black lame'. omg. its totally on the way to my imagined futuristic silver jumpsuit!!!!
check it!

Alright headed down the road to pure barre then brunch with my dear friend at this awesome place I love to eat called SIMONS COFFEE HOUSE.
- I have this ODD measuring stick of why I would LOVE a place or not. . . I totally judge them on the quality of their tomatoes. LOL.
- Some places have pale tasteless horrid tomatoes- but be all pomp and glitz in the front. . .my favorite places we unassuming! They have more money invested into food quality than excess in decor.
Not saying that I prefer to be at an establishment where the chef kills roaches with the same spatula he flips my egg whites with!!!! - Just sayin' tomatoes are key.
-
Have a fabu - fantastic - fabulous day!

Pure Happiness on the Trail!

This is THE TRAIL! - Not just any trail but MY TRAIL! I live alongside a forest in South West Florida. The forest obviously is not photoed here but is on the right of this picture!  This is the trail that commands my soul currently. I've been trying to get out pretty early to beat the heat as much as possible. 5 miles - on the dime!  I've noticed with my recent return to Pure Barre, my stomach is SUPER STRONG. - Stronger than it has ever been. I have this iron core that helps me HANG ON in runs that  I really appreciate! I'm done fiddling around with all kinds of workouts - I think I'm my best with Pure Barre and Running or Elliptical. But honestly - I think what has helped me over the edge recently to see some solid improvements is my diet change.
- I've been really paying attention to making sure I down some dark green leafy veggies daily. I've restricted my caloric intake and I'm drinking more water and tea. unsweetened.

- I've always been somewhat shy of showing my tummy - so tend to gravitate toward flowy loose tops - NO MORE!!
- I'm wearing my tank top proudly now! Showing off the fact that I TOO CAN HAVE A WAISTLINE!!
- Joining the ranks of waistline people is pretty much the massively HUGE accomplishment for me lately. - I've always been told how beautiful my legs are etc - but I don't care lol I want to have a trim belly! The world starts and stops around this possibility!!!!!!
-
ok I know I'm being dramatic - but. . .. hey I'm Min.

Also - I finally fit into a Pure Barre tank top - I know its no big deal with many - but they always only sold tops for teeny tiny pb girls! What about us battleaxe tuckers?!!! Can't we represent too?!
- well. .. I guess so, if I mash myself into parameters.
- Its odd that the single desire to fit into a DAMN tank top that says PURE BARRE, can escalate and morph into this ALL IMPORTANT mini goal.. . but there it is. tank 1. down.
I have plans to fit into all the the other damn pb tops I've gotten in the past without realizing a Large is really a juniors large UGH.
but - . . . it keeps me trending down!
-There is a huge awkward nakedness that goes along with wearing a tank top out and about with people looking at you - without that comfort blanket! that shield!
- I know its ridiculous. . .  but it is what it is.
- Until next time- still loving pure barre- still trucking along for the disney wine and dine half marathon!!!! take care.
